Meet Andrea Aguilar | Music/Visual Artist

1). Why did you pursue a creative career?

No matter what I am going through, being creative brings true joy and excitement to my life; it has always come naturally to me and has helped me in my lowest moments from a very young age. Due to its therapeutic nature, I always felt inclined to express myself through it; I also grew up surrounded by musicians which made it seem normal and doable. Over time making music and painting became what I looked forward to the most and I just knew that was what I was supposed to pursue.

2). What should our readers know about you and your art?

I want people to know that no matter what medium I'm using, what I create are stories of many healing processes, realizations, awakenings, griefs, inner conversations, and closures. It is all deeply personal and thought through. Since this is the nature of what I do it is important to say that I work very hard on it and I am fully involved in every stage of the process - which is mostly exclusively completed on my own- from production, writing, arranging, video editing, creating visual experiences and painting.

Something else that is important and hope that people perceive, is that everything is connected and it all belongs in the same world, a world of feelings, colors, and compelling melodic experiences. I believe that bringing to life a complete vision of what lives within is one of the most liberating and beautiful experiences I’ve ever had.

3). Tell us more about your career goals, what can you share with our community?

My main goal right now is to keep growing and sharing; I am looking forward to performing more and participating in more art exhibitions. I am also working on my first EP and all the visuals that are tied to this project, which will be coming out next year and will include illustrations, animations, and homemade videos all edited by me.

In the long term, I hope to expand that community that connects with my sound and my little world.

4). What was your thought process behind creating music & visual arts?

To be honest, I don’t have a thought process, at one point in time I did, but over time I have realized that the more I think it through the more forced and unnatural it feels. I don’t like to think about being authentic because that brings me pressure, and I don't like thinking about what other people create because that builds expectations, and in the end, it is all counterproductive. So I truly try to keep my mind empty, focus on being grounded, and let whatever wants to come out to the surface come out without judging it.

5). What are the important things to you, in life?

There are a few things that I consider important in life; family and loved ones, authenticity, sharing, and kindness, but there are two that I would like to highlight. First, gratitude, because having it all means nothing if we are not thankful and appreciative of all the beautiful things life gives to us, no matter how small and simple they are. We should never take anything for granted.

Second is self-expression, which can be shown through fashion, speaking your mind, art, music, dance, or however you want to do it; but I think doing it is crucial for having a healthy relationship with yourself, which will ultimately lead to having a healthy relationship with others.

6). Give some advice for upcoming artists wanting to follow a career in the arts?

My advice would be to first focus on being tuned in with yourself; how positive and clear your relationship with yourself is will determine how persistent you are, how much you bet on yourself and your talent, and how cohesive you are with what you want to share with the world. The more tuned in you are with yourself, the more confident you are and confidence is key when sharing your mind and work with others.

My next piece of advice is very common but it’s always relevant is consistency; to be consistent with your content, with your learning process -which is never ending- and with creating.

Lastly, another one that I think is very important is to allow yourself to change and expand; if you want to not only follow a creative path but to live a creative life, you have to fully embrace change; accept that we change, our perception of what beauty is, and what’s appealing to us. Everything is and has to endlessly evolve, and we constantly have to let go of what doesn't work for us anymore and be okay with it.

7). Shoutout is all about shouting out others whom you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Whom would you like to shout out?

I am very lucky to have very talented friends that I've always looked up to. I'll like to give some special mentions to Grace Pepin- an amazing painter based in Brooklyn, and my best friend. Nicolle Jadad- a beautiful songwriter from Colombia with the most mesmerizing voice. And Ophelie Couelle- a magical multi-media artist based in Geneva, Switzerland. Not only are these exceptional creative women, but they have also inspired me and have given me their endless support and love, which I'll forever be thankful for.
